Between May and August 2015, according to court records, Winston County Sheriff Hobby Walker ordered deputies Zak Green and Steven Moody to “peel off” confiscated marijuana from drug raids so that he could give it to his aunt, who was sick and dying from cancer. “I need a little bag of dope ok?” Sheriff Walker told Green one afternoon. “I’ve been trying to get one ever since I’ve been in office and this has been going on eight months. The woman’s gonna die before I you know?” Deputies Green and Moody resisted for several months, even calling out the Sheriff once when he tried to slip some confiscated marijuana into his desk drawer. On September 23, after meeting with the Attorney General and state law enforcement officials the deputies videotaped a meeting between themselves and the Sheriff, wherein they handed marijuana over to him that they had confiscated from an outdoor grow.
On November 30, 2015 Sheriff Walker fired Deputies Green and Moody, who have since filed a lawsuit against the Sheriff and the County for wrongful termination. So far no arrests have been made in the case.
